“The Forbidden Art” is a title intentionally picked by SDA to bring
awareness to the fact that dancing by women is forbidden in Iran
today. It has been that way since the revolution of 1979. Although
it is not SDA’s intention to make any political statement, it IS our
goal to present dance as a beautiful and intellectual art form that
can be enjoyed by all. In addition to the recent political
restrictions, historically speaking, Persian dance has not been
perceived as a legitimate art form.
Born and raised in Iran,
Shahrzad has been involved with Persian dance since childhood. She
studied Dance and Performance Art at the California Institute of the
Arts, and she holds a BA in Dance, as well as an MA in Creative Arts
from San Francisco State University. Her dance training includes
Modern, Jazz, Ballet, West African, Afro-Haitian, Flamenco, and
Persian.
